Sexism, prejudice or discrimination based on sex or gender, especially against women and girls. Although its origin is unclear, the term ‘sexism’ emerged from the ‘second-wave’ feminism of the 1960s through ’80s and was most likely modeled on the civil rights movement’s term ‘racism.’ The Everyday Sexism project aims to take a step towards gender equality, by proving wrong those who tell women that they can’t complain because we are equal. It is a place to record stories of sexism faced on a daily basis, by ordinary women, in ordinary places. Most women experience sexism and harassment on a regular basis—daily acts that are often ignored. With her Everyday Sexism Project, writer Laura Bates wanted to give women an outlet to speak up. In this fascinating talk, Laura talks about her inspiring initiative. The Everyday Sexism Project is an ever-increasing collection of over 50,000 women's experiences of gender imbalance. Gender disparities are a persistent form of inequality in every country. Despite remarkable progress in some areas, no country in the world—rich or poor—has achieved gender equality. Sexism means discrimination based on sex or gender, or the belief that because men are superior to women, discrimination is justified. Such a belief can be conscious or unconscious. In sexism, as in racism, the differences between two (or more) groups are viewed as indications that one group is superior or inferior. 2021.10.19 08:15 LongNectarine3 His sexism was punished
I have finally found the sub for this story. It has been booted in other subs because it only fits here and I just discovered this fantastic place today.
The principle players are me, sexist boss/director, CEO of sexist boss
In the spring of 2005 I was fortunate enough to get my daughter accepted into a fantastic school for children 0 to 3. I loved it there except for the director. He was very dismissive of me, and I noticed most of the mothers. In fact I can’t remember him going out of his way to talk to anyone but the fathers. At the time it was a small alarm in my head but it didn’t stop me from applying for a management position when it opened.
Director didn’t think much of me so he was shocked when I shared with the hiring committee all of the credentials I had earned. I know he didn’t bother to read my hiring packet. I aced the interview with the other 4 members so he couldn’t stop me from being hired (he tried).
I loved the job because part of it was supervising parent drop off and pick up in case of questions or complaints. I also had time to play with the kids. Since I had children this age, and my daughter was in one of the classes, I really loved this time.
I should mention I had 7 brothers growing up. It was during a time when I had to know how to physically fight or I was toast. I lost the violent streak as it doesn’t serve me but I never lost the feeling that I am any man’s equal. Any man. I don’t care if you are my boss.
He noticed my lack of female deference to him almost immediately. Even though I reorganized the entire filing system, tracked intake, and then gathered a ton of resources for our parents (we had coat drives for the kids, toys for tots, lots of great help from the community) He thought I was worthless and was looking for a reason to terminate me (just got out of an abusive relationship with 2 kids under 3).
Well he begin to really watch me. He monitored my time in the rooms obsessively. I only spent an hour combined for drop off and pick up a day. It was in my job description. Yet he felt it was more important that I be in the office and no longer have access to the rooms. This cut me off from parents, who would need me and complain I wasn’t there. The teachers hated it but there was nothing I could do about it.
Then he moves me from a large office that could accommodate these meetings to a literal windowless broom closer that parents had to stand at the door to talk about confidential information. This led to less parental involvement in the program. It was frustratingly difficult but I made the best of it.
Cue Christmas time. It was huge because we made sure all the families had presents and a big dinner for their holidays. This landed on me but I had made relationships so I was successful. New coats, great toys, large gift baskets of food, boxes of dinner.
I had been having medical issues that I won’t get into much because it has no bearing on the story except I got a hernia lifting at work. I told the school nurse what happened in confidence. It was the day of the big Christmas party. I had things to do but I thought I was confiding in a friend. She told me she had to tell the director that I had a hernia, that I had lifting restrictions. I knew what would happen but her hands were tied.
Yup, got kicked out of work that day. Told to go home because I was injured and it was an hour before this huge party with fun lined up for my own kids who missed the whole thing along with their mom.
I looked for other work. The same nurse told me about a contract manger position at the state that was opening up. I applied thinking there was no chance but I got the job.
I didn’t think too much of it but she knew about the opening because that position manages the contract my director was supervising. This made me his contact with the state. Thus becoming more powerful than he ever was.
Rule one in the life of the nonprofit: work with the state and the state will work with you. I had no problem with professionalism. I had zero plans to use my newfound power over this man that made my life a living nightmare for over a year. I planned to just forget.
He had other ideas. He shares with CEO what a pain in the ass I am (dang) and that made CEO really reeeeeally nervous. This had a backfiring affect as now CEO was watching director more closely.
I went about my new life with real joy. I got into the groove and to be honest there is about 5 people’s worth of work for every 1 government drone so he wasn’t necessary on my mind. Not until I got to rewrite the contracts. Cue the nukes.
I made sure to know, by heart, everything in that contract. It was my Bible as I quoted it several times a day. I then started to use it as a sledgehammer with the director. I’d get snippy emails about requirements so I’d quote the contract which usually stated he had to do what I requested as long as it was reasonable, cc’d my supervisor and moved on with glee.
Everything had to be by the letter but even more so with him. I made him report everything, in detail. Always using the contract as backup.
I started to become obsessed with his billing as I was the one approving his grant payments. I did enough research to find out that CEO was into shady billing practices with Medicaid (huge no no). I begin to request more information to build a case for a state audit of the contract.
CEO catches wind of all this because director is still complaining. Only he is using unkind words to describe me. (Starts with b, rhymes with witch).
Finally the CEO realizes that I maybe will find something. I know this because in the middle of my investigation he cancels the contract. I am not surprised, but I am delighted. My current supervisor (who had a vendetta against the company for poor service) was deliriously happy. The CEO had planned on requesting a huge budget increase to coincide with increased service (muscling out our smaller but stellar contracts). This would have been disaster. It was a win for us. And it made them lose out on potentially millions of dollars in revenue opportunities.
In the end, because there was no longer a contract, the director was “moved” to another part of the company. I saw him out and about one day and it was the dirtiest look I’d ever gotten. It was orgasmic.

2021.10.19 08:15 HippyHunter7 How would you go about making a Dead space film?
Specifically, when and where would you set it? Would you follow the first game 1 for 1 in story beats? Would you keep the same characters but take your own creative liberties (to avoid a rec/quarantine style issue?) Would you have it set in the past when the markers were first discovered or would you have it set on the Ishimaru right before Issac arrives?
I'm genuinely curious what people think would make the best plot for a movie adaption.

2021.10.19 08:15 i_hatemy_parents I broke a plate, and my parents went berserk
Not a parent, but I need advice.
The title might sound stupid, but this has been bothering me for quite a bit.
This is an incredibly long post, so TL;DR - I broke a porcelain plate, my parents hit me and yelled at me a lot for doing so, while restricting the way I eat my dinner, and they claim I'm an asshole because I "don't have respect for their property", and that I'm always "in my own world".
So, a few weeks ago, when I (F15) was eating my dinner, I was asked to wash my plate, which I did shortly after I finished. The issue was that I kept my plate near the corner, and when I went to get my sponge, it teetered off the counter, and broke into a bunch of pieces.
My mom (F46), who's usually pretty cheery, just decided to fucking snap, and yell at me a lot for apparently "being in my own world" because that plate(porcelain material) cost 2,500 rupees(roughly equal to 35 USD). I had offered to pay for the plate out of my own money, but she refused it. I even said I will clean up the mess, but then she tells me not to do anything, and cleans the entire mess, while deathglaring me. She then brings up that I didn't even "try to help clean the plate", but I was told not to, which is what's making me super confused?
My dad (M50), who's usually a pain in the ass like this, doesn't try to improve the situation by saying that he doesn't tolerate the "way I'm acting like a monkey", and that I "don't deserve that kind of plate". I cried myself to sleep about the whole situation, because despite me trying to do my best to fix things, they refuse my help, and then get upset at me for not helping, which is pretty contradictory.
While I'm crying, I hear a "KEEP CRYING! CRY! YOU DESERVE IT! YOU DESERVE TO FEEL BAD FOR WHAT YOU DID!" from my mom, while my dad feels somewhat bad about the whole situation and comes to me about it later that night, but since I CLEARLY don't wish to talk to him, naturally, as any grown responsible adult would, he berates me some more. Perfect.
Now, they've recently been restricting the way I eat my meals, so that I can "never make that mistake again". I've been forced to eat with steel plates only, and they've been timing my meals where I HAVE to finish it in 5-10 minutes, otherwise they just take it away from me. Normally, I wouldn't mind eating out of steel, but it clearly is being used as a punishment for me while my parents still get to eat out of porcelain, while they just judge me as I eat.
Since I've been eating out of porcelain for the last 5 years, I've been taking it out, remembering my punishment, and putting it back instead, as an old habit (also because I can be forgetful) but one time, my dad saw me forget the rule, so as I take it out by accident, he beats me again. Today, my mother gave me breakfast from, you guessed it, a porcelain plate. I told her that my father will hit me, but she just shrugged the whole thing off and said "it wasn't a big deal, just stop complaining and eat"(but it was when I broke the plate, and you yelled at me so much for it?) I did, and went to wash it, but my hand spasmed, and the plate fell to the ground (It DIDN'T break).
My father saw this, and he just decides the best way to punish me for this is by hitting me, and groping me multiple times, by pinching and hitting my butt. He then yells at me for "continuing the same mistake again and again", and how I "clearly have no respect for his property", despite my constant apologies. He then left saying that when he comes back, he is going to kill me, so I'm submitting this post before he does come back because I have no clue what to do.

2021.10.19 08:15 Throwaway69236859 Covalent to ionic bonding
Hi everyone. Today I had chemistry and I noticed something. For the longest time teachers always say “x atom wants to give x amounts of electrons” atoms are always personified to teach this.
Here’s the thing atoms aren’t people and don’t WANT to give up anything. So I wondered why? And then as me and my teacher were talking he brought up another good point.
If we use Fl2 as an example, it’s a diatomic element meaning it is covalently bonded, from my knowledge a covalent bond is pretty stable and does not really NEED to form an ionic bond to be stable. So then why does it? Why does it react with say Na, it shouldn’t need to logically?
So that’s kind of two questions. Would some of you smart people be able to explain why this is?

Anandtech has performed a Dolphin "render test" (the unofficial benchmark?), I don't know what the result 237 seconds implies. Does the Dolphin emu run at full speed in 1080p, with headroom for anti-aliasing? Is RPCS3 viable at the same settings? Does the lack of Vulkan limit PCSX2 on Linux? Is Nintendo Switch out of reach?

2021.10.19 08:15 smolcats19 I don’t know why people keep saying all Cristina and Burke had in common was surgery like that literally isn’t her whole personality.
All Cristina likes is literally surgery. Surgery is her true love. And honestly her idea of a relationship is basically a fuck buddy with whom she can talk about cool surgeries. The only other thing is she is a supportive partner, even if it means she has to compromise and change herself a little in her personal life.
All the men she is in a relationship with might be hardcore at work but in their personal life they have nothing in common. Again because Cristina has no personal life. And it isn’t like she wants a personal life but just doesn’t have time. She doesn’t want a personal life. Surgery is literally her whole life.
So when she is in a relationship she compromises her personal life, she is ok when Burke who’s a traditional man wants to get married even though she personally doesn’t care about marriage. She is supportive when Burke had the tremor, she helped him cover up it did have a personal benefit but also could’ve put her career on line. Similarly with Owen even though he literally chokes her she stays with him because she knows he’s suffering and because He was there for her after the shooting.
The real point where she draws the line is when she just knows that something is going to come between her and surgery. She didn’t want to have a baby because it would most definitely come between her and surgery. She hates the idea when Burke’s mom tells her to be a housewife. Because yes she will compromise everything else but surgery she would never.
This trend even continued with Meredith. They both started fighting for this very reason that Mer was now less focused on surgery than Cristina. (They both were right in their own ways I’m just saying this to illustrate that Cristina just has a natural tendency to be drawn towards people who are passionate about surgery just like she is)
And I love Cristina so I’m not saying any of this as a negative thing. In fact it’s great that she is so passionate about surgery. This is just my take on Cristina’s relationships.
